Making Art Accessible To All– Meet Waterford’s Street Art InkHave you noticed a piece of street art, graffiti or mural around Waterford City in recent months that you loved? Well, the likelihood is that Street Art Ink Ltd, the new arts management company and brainchild of Edel Tobin is the team behind it.Passionate about art as a subject for everyone, not just the elite, Street Art Ink’s modus operandi is the delivery of a broad sphere of art-based activities to promote public engagement and bring a positive impact on the community.Together with some 50 Irish and international street artists, Tobin’s hand-selected motley crew bring about large-scale projects such as murals, sculptures, artist residencies, youth exchange programmes, education and outreach programmes and guided tours as well as live music performances for the many and not just the few. Just recently they brought their graffiti skills workshops to Dún Laoghaire’s Cruinniú na n-Óg, painted a series of murals for the Art Council of Ireland’s 70th anniversary and Edel herself also met with Prince Charles and Camilla during their recent trip to Waterford at a newly painted artwork specially commissioned for the Royal visit by artist James Kirwan.Edel Tobin – Street Art InkCommunity pride is at the heart of everything we do at Fitzgerald Power, so partnering with Street Art Ink to paint a mural on our Greyfriars building was a no-brainer. Residing within the theme of migration, we’re delighted to announce that Spanish artist Taquen will be painting a beautiful piece depicting birds in full flight all across the wall. As this was a community project, both Edel and Taquen linked in with the local Birds Society and enquired about birds indigenous to Waterford and where they fly in winter. They found out that there are some 15 birds indigenous to Waterford, with the Barn Owl perhaps the most well recognised, with a particular link to the Greyfriars/Blackfriars and Reginald’s Tower area.“We’re over the moon to welcome Edel, Taquen and the whole Street Art Ink team to paint something so beautiful and inherently Waterford on our Greyfriars building. It means so much to enrich the lives of those walking through the Greyfriars/Blackfriars area every day with this piece, and we hope you’ll grow to love it as much as we did when we saw the first mock-ups. A big subset of Fitzgerald Power’s employees are from the Sunny South East, with the rest of them growing to love Waterford more and more –– so it was so important for us and them to support the community and feel part of the regeneration of the city. We may not be the royal company you’re now used to keeping, but we hope we’ll do!”Stuart Fitzgerald, Managing Partner Fitzgerald PowerTaquenStreet Art InkSTREET ART INK’s vision is to make art accessible to all and to expand how they can benefit the community using art over time.
