Pharmacy Sector Research Project
The Irish Pharmacy Union is the professional, representative organisation for community pharmacists in Ireland.

Project Overview

In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023 the Irish Pharmacy Union commissioned Fitzgerald Power to undertake the annual review of the community pharmacy sector. Historically, this project had been managed by international Big 4 practices.
Our objective was to produce a report which would form the basis of the IPU’s discussions and negotiations with external stakeholders, allow the IPU and pharmacists to better understand the sector and allow pharmacists to benchmark their performance against sector averages and best performers.
Building on the traditional structure of the report we delivered an in-depth analysis of the sector and the challenges it faces. The research projects included thought-provoking interviews with leading community pharmacy figures, detailed financial case studies and recommendations for responding to market pressures.
The project also included a financial survey of the sector with participants receiving an online KPI benchmarking dashboard. Our reports have become the reference point for sector benchmarking.
